FBI questions NC man in Texas?

MIDLAND, TEXAS --

Neighbors say?a U.S. military arrested after allegedly trying to go through a security checkpoint at a Texas airport with explosives was a Green Beret who returned from Afghanistan in November.

FBI spokesman Mike Martinez said Sunday that Atwater is at the Midland County jail and charged with trying to bring explosives onto an airplane.

He will remain in custody at least until his arraignment Tuesday.

Atwater and his family had been visiting relatives and were on their way back to his base in North Carolina. Atwater had a reservation on a Saturday flight to Dallas-Fort Worth.

It's unclear whether he was in military uniform or what kind of explosives were in the bag. Authorities say the?explosives were in?military-grade wrapping.

Special Operations public information officials could not be reached for comment.

The FBI says the suspect is 30-year-old Trey Scott Atwater?was stopped at Midland International Airport about 9 a.m. Saturday.

The airport was closed down for a search for about an hour-and-a-half.

Atwater's neighbors in Hope Mills described Atwater and his family as nice people and said they hope the incident is just a mistake.?

Ginobili leads Spurs past Jazz, 104-89 (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? Manu Ginobili scored 23 points, 14 in the second quarter, to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-89 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

Ginobili was 9 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

The win gave Spurs coach Gregg Popovich his 800th career coaching victory. He is the 14th coach to reach that milestone and third among active coaches behind George Karl (1038) and Rick Adelman (945).

DeJuan Blair had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tony Parker added 14 points, and Tim Duncan 12 as San Antonio moved to 3-1.

Duncan continued to struggle to find his form. The 36-year-old forward followed up his 1-of-8 performance in Houston by going 4 of 13 from the field. He had nine rebounds.

Ginobili injected life to an offense that had gone cold in Thursday's 105-85 loss to the Houston Rockets. He began the Spurs' quick turnaround in the second period, scoring the first 11 points of the quarter. That propelled San Antonio on a 22-10 run that ended with Richard Jefferson hitting a 3-pointer with 5:26 left and gave the Spurs 17-point lead.

The Spurs were 7 of 8 from the 3-point line during the second period and were 10 and 16 for the game ( 63 percent).

Al Jefferson returned to the starting lineup for Utah, scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds in 35 minutes. Jefferson sat out Utah's 102-99 win over Philadelphia on Friday night with an inflamed right ankle.

But Utah shot just 35 percent (18 of 51) from the field and had only 11 assists.

San Antonio never trailed and built its largest lead at 27 points on Blair's basket with 9:52 left that made it 89-62.

Josh Howard, who flirted with signing with San Antonio earlier in the month before committing to the Jazz, had 18 points.

Forward Derrick Favors, who had a career-high 20 points in his first career start Friday, only had seven points.

Notes: Ginobili and Blair are the only Spurs to score 20 or more points in a game this season. ... Utah is 2-14 since the AT&T Center opened in 2002-2003 season.

Wheels Blog: New Ford Fusion Will Warn Drivers Who Drift

Ford Motor Company offered on Thursday a taste of some advanced technology that will be featured in the all-new Fusion, which is scheduled to be introduced at the Detroit auto show in January. The technical tidbit is a tracking system that can help prevent drowsy or inattentive drivers from wandering out of their lane. While similar technology has previously been offered on some automobiles, Octavio Navarro, a Ford spokesman, said in a telephone interview that the Fusion will be the first affordable nonluxury vehicle to offer this type of system.

Fusion?s Lane Keeping System monitors the vehicle?s position with a windshield-mounted digital camera that can track lane markings. If the car drifts close to the edge of the lane without the turn signal on, the driver will be notified by a vibration in the steering wheel that feels much like the pulsing caused by rumble strips in the road. A system that Ford calls Lane Keeping Aid can steer the car back toward the center of the lane if the driver doesn?t respond to the warning.

If the Lane Keeping System calculates that the driving pattern over a period of time suggests that the driver is drowsy, a chime sounds and a coffee cup icon warning appears on the instrument panel. If the driver continues to nap, a second chime is issued.

According to a Ford news release, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 100,000 reported accidents are caused annually by drowsy drivers, resulting in 1,500 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary loses.

The system must be turned on by the driver, who can choose to employ just the alert function without the steering assist. The intensity of the warnings is also driver selectable. The switched-on system becomes active at speeds over 40 m.p.h. when lane markings are visible.

?Fusion?s Lane Keeping System combines a digital imaging sensor with our own state-of-the-art control software to process images and determine what level of warning or assistance to provide to the driver,? Michale Kane, Ford development engineer, said in a media release.

The all-new Fusion is a very important car for Ford, because it will determine how big a role the automaker plays in the large and lucrative midsize marketplace. Few will be surprised if more details are disseminated before the big reveal at Detroit?s Cobo Hall.

(Reuters) ? Ron Paul, a congressman from Texas, is one of the leading candidates in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, the first contest on the road to the Republican presidential nomination.

Here are some facts about Paul.

* Paul, 76, is considered a godfather of the Tea Party movement for lower taxes and limited government.

* During campaigning, he has warned of eroding civil liberties, a Soviet Union-style economic collapse in the United States and violence in the streets. He once wrote a book called "End the Fed," referring to the U.S. Federal Reserve, and has called for eliminating the central banking system that underpins the world's largest economy.

* Paul has a level of mobilization other candidates lack and thus a loyal base of supporters who are expected to come out on Iowa caucus night on Tuesday.

* This is Paul's third bid for the White House. In 2008, he ran for the Republican presidential nomination as an anti-war candidate, raising $35 million in small donations from a fervent group of backers, but failed to win any primary or caucus. In 2008, he came in fifth in the Iowa caucuses.

* As part of his small government philosophy, Paul has refused his congressional pension. When working as a doctor he refused to accept Medicare or Medicaid payments and would not let his children accept federal student loans.

* Reuters reported a direct-mail solicitation for a Paul campaign two decades ago that warned of a coming "race war" in America and a government conspiracy to cover up the impact of AIDS. Paul is now under fire for connections to extremist right-wing views. He says a ghostwriter on his campaign wrote the document.

* Paul is part of the only father-and-son team serving together in the U.S. Congress. His son, Republican Rand Paul, is the junior senator from Kentucky.

* A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul settled in Texas where he began an obstetrics and gynecology practice. He says he's delivered more than 4,000 babies.
