McCain: Billions in US aid to Pakistan in jeopardy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Sen. John McCain says the billions of U.S. aid to Pakistan must come with strings attached.

The top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, which helps to oversee that money, says Pakistan should show it's helping to "prevent the needless deaths of young Americans."

McCain's comment on CNN's "State of the Union" shows the acute frustration in Congress because of alleged ties between Pakistan's intelligence outfit and anti-U.S. insurgents.

U.S.-Pakistan relations have become even more strained after NATO airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani troops along the Afghanistan border. Pakistan retaliated by shutting down U.S. supply lines.

The Arizona lawmaker says the U.S. should "explore all alternatives," although he did not provide specifics.

Libya's defense minister: New army top priority (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Libya's new defense minister says one of his top priorities is to rebuild the country's military.

Osama al-Juwali says the primary obstacle he faces is unifying the various revolutionary factions that helped topple Moammar Gadhafi's regime in an eight-month civil war.

He says that "we have to reorganize," but that it is too early to disarm fighters still in the capital of Tripoli.

Al-Juwali was commander of revolutionary forces from the western mountain town of Zintan. His fighters helped storm Tripoli in August and then capture Gadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam, last month.

Al-Juwali was sworn in Sunday before the country's new leaders and other Cabinet ministers.

Israel has identified eastern Africa as an important strategic interest and is stepping up ties with nations in the region in a joint effort to control the spread of Islamic extremists, officials said Thursday.

In effect, Israel would become a player siding with Christian-led African nations in conflicts with Muslim movements, a fault line that has sharpened around the continent in recent years.

Israeli moves come as the United States as well has hiked up military support for African governments, in large part to combat al-Qaida-linked groups.

Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, hosted the leaders of Uganda and Kenya earlier this week, following a meeting at the United Nations in September with the president of the newly liberated South Sudan, the mainly Christian and animist nation that gained independence from Muslim Arab-led Sudan in July.

The outcome of the meetings - and the extent of Israel's moves to ally with the Africans - remains murky. Kenya's leader went so far as to say Israel promised to provide security assistance to his country to help protect its borders Israeli officials say such claims are premature, but say an alliance with Kenya and other eastern African countries is natural.

Time for the usual disclaimer, since we're taking a journey into the murky world of Cupertino's patent applications -- it's just as likely we'll never see or hear of this tech again as it is to wind up in the next iPhone. While everyone else is betting on NFC, Apple wants to use next-generation cameras and invisible ink to negotiate digital handshakes. Snap a picture of a cash register with a barcode and your iDevice will generate a unique ID to pair up -- but in order to keep the technology secure, the codes would have to be painted on with "invisible" fluorescent coatings. When you're pairing two iPhones (for example) to share contacts, the key could be generated on one of the screens while the other took a picture of it. If this all seems too complex, boring and pointless now, just think: this could be how we log into Foursquare in a decade's time.
