Bow Hunting Preparation

Fall time is the start of deer hunting season. While many wait until rifle season is in full swing, you can start enjoying the season sooner by choosing to go Bow hunting. Bow hunting is perfect for all hunters, including those who are new to the sport. If you are new, then you should make sure you have all of the required equipment before you embark on your first hunt. Not only will the proper equipment help increase your odds of a successful kill, but it will also make the experience an enjoyable one.

The single most important part of Bow hunting is the bow itself. Depending on where you purchase your bow, you may also need to purchase the additional equipment that is needed so you can successfully operate your bow. This includes sights, arrow rests, stabilizers and of course the arrows that you will use your bow to shoot. Some sporting good shops will sell kits that include all of these items and are ready to shoot. A kit is probably the best way for a beginner to get started. A more experienced hunter will benefit from purchasing the items separately so they can choose which accessories will better suit their needs.

Now that you have your bow, you also need to consider the other items that are needed for your hunt. This includes the proper camouflage and scent reducing items. When you are Bow hunting, you need to be considerably closer to the deer when compared to traditional rifle hunting. This means the proper camouflage and scent sprays to help cover your scent are required to keep from scaring the deer away from you. There are many commercially available products that will help attract deer to you so you can increase your odds of a successful hunt.

Bow hunting for deer puts you the middle of nature during one of the most colorful times of year. Make sure you are ready by purchasing all of the equipment you need before you start your hunt, so you don?t waste your time or your money. With a little preparation, you can ensure your success as a deer hunter.

Tourism groups question reopening Hatteras

For Dare County officials wrestling with the question of whether to reopen at least part of Irene-damaged Hatteras Island, the answer was obvious: the electricity was running and stores were stocked with supplies. And, most importantly, people needed the work that tourists would bring.

"The only hiccup is that the ferry capacity isn't sufficient to accommodate everyone who wants to come," said Dare County Manager Bobby Outten. Parts of the island ? the four southernmost villages least damaged by Irene ? reopened Sept. 15 to visitors.

But that hiccup is the main reason many groups dependent on tourism opposed reopening the island when it was accessible only by ferry and not via N.C. 12, which Hurricane Irene chewed up, creating a new inlet and several new breaches at the north end of the island. Among those groups were the Dare County Tourism Board and the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.

A survey of property managers showed the island was 90 percent booked in September, said Scott Leggat, a tourism board member and vice president of Outer Beaches Realty. But the managers also estimated ferries could bring only about 25 percent of the people with reservations, he said.

"The result was that people were told that you can come back, but you just can't get here," he said.

Bridge washed out
Most cars would typically get to Hatteras Island from the north, taking the two-lane N.C. 12 to one of seven villages on the island. But with state transportation officials estimating that a temporary bridge won't be in place and the breaches repaired until the first week of October, Dare County was left with the choice of writing off a valuable part of the fall season or trying to salvage part of it.

Fall is a popular time along the Outer Banks for people who enjoy the less-crowded beaches, restaurants with shorter or no lines, and surf fishing. Sweatshirts replace T-shirts for visitors more fond of the serenity of a long walk than a good tan.

But there's just no easy way to get to Hatteras by ferry ? and it's equally difficult to leave. Visitors have to go to Swan Quarter or Cedar Island for a ferry ride to Ocracoke that takes more than two hours. Once on Ocracoke, they drive 10 to 15 minutes across that island to take a 40-minute ferry ride to Hatteras. The state Ferry Division added extra trips and each route is run five times a day, but the ferries are booked solid on weekends through mid-October. With each ferry able to carry about 50 cars, depending on size, that means no more than 500 cars a day can get to Hatteras.

Then there's the issue of Ocracoke, which suffered far less damage from Irene than Hatteras. The limited ferry space means fewer tourists and residents can get to and from Ocracoke, too. The Ferry Division said Wednesday that it will give priority to Ocracoke residents with medical appointments on the mainland.

"It's not what we're used to," said Leslie Lanier, owner of Books to Be Red on Ocracoke. "But normal is not where we are right now, in anything."

Opening Hatteras has definitely hurt business on Ocracoke, she said.

"As I say that, I've got friends and neighbors on Hatteras that need business also," she said. "I don't begrudge them."

Lingering effects of hurricane
After Irene made landfall Aug. 27 in North Carolina, the storm isolated Hatteras. Officials opened the island first to residents via an emergency ferry route, then to non-resident property owners. On Sept. 17, they opened the four southernmost villages of Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras to visitors. The three northernmost villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo suffered the most damage. They won't reopen before Oct. 6.

"You've got ferry capacity that can bring some people over, and you've got villages that are ready to go," Outten said, explaining the reasoning of Dare County officials. "You've got hundreds of people in those villages that are out of work. Businesses can open, but they just don't have any customers. ... The choice became, do you use that ferry capacity to bring over who we can and allow businesses to reopen."

Some visitors bought travel insurance, which reimbursed them for a mandatory evacuation. But the largest insurer for island visitors, CSA, hasn't decided whether to reimburse visitors who couldn't get to the island because they couldn't get ferry reservations. In a statement to The Associated Press, CSA said it's working to see if it can cover the unusual circumstances regarding Hatteras access.

Leggat said some customers have told Outer Beaches that they won't rent with the company again if it keeps CSA as its travel insurer.

But the bigger issue, he said, is the public relations disaster that he believes Dare County caused by reopening the island too early.

"We've fought hard to get people to choose Hatteras and build a brand for Hatteras," he said. "But at the end of the day, they're the ones getting the shaft."

Outten said he wouldn't have handled the reopening differently, even in hindsight.

"We were confident going in, and we're OK now," he said. "The weather is nice. The power held like we thought it would. Commodities are coming over. We're comfortable going forward. ... Nothing happened over the weekend that would change any of that.

Health and Fitness ? Meditation Tip: Meditating With a Chattering ...

It?s the first day of meditation class. The group is sitting in a circle, and people shuffle and twist in their seats as we prepare to turn out the lights. Finally one person shares his fears. ?What if I won?t be able to do this-what if I can?t make my thoughts stop?? Others look relieved that they?re not the only one. ?I can?t calm my mind?I?m just too distracted!?

My students are not alone. Even the anonymous monk who wrote The Cloud of Unknowing, a 14th century classic on meditation, talks about dealing with intrusive thoughts. The monk (or maybe it was really a nun?I?ve always wondered?) was a meditation expert. He (or she) meditated every day, all day long. Even so, intrusive thoughts still happened.

Mind chatter. It just is. Our minds buzz and flit, even when we don?t want them to. It?s how we?re made.

But even though you know it will happen, you can still learn to calm your mind. You can learn some steps to help your thoughts quiet. Sure, there will be times when your mind is full of busy-ness. But it can get better. For a few moments, more and more each time you meditate, you can find a place to rest.

Space. Peace.

Your body knows how. You just need to set it free.

Begin by noticing your breathing. When thoughts come, breathe into the muscles in your face. Let your breath gather up tension, and then release. Notice how your breath feels in your sinuses. Let your breath move all the way up your nose and through your mind?gathering up thoughts and releasing them.

And then begin to notice your body.

Notice where you feel warmth?and where you feel cool. Notice where you feel relaxed?and where any muscles feel tense. Breathe through the tense muscles, gathering up tension and releasing it?and notice how it feels now.

And now.

Notice your thoughts going by?like leaves moving down a stream. Notice them from the grassy bank, where you are resting. Notice them moving past overhead, like the clouds moving by?some of them stormy?some soft and small?and notice any blue patches in between.

And begin to pay attention to the clear spaces too?. They?re there. Small at first, and then longer-and you forget to notice them, and your thoughts drift, and you watch them go by?

And you?re meditating.

This is one way, one path to quieting your thoughts. We?ll look at others, in other articles. But this path, of breathing, and releasing, noticing and noticing again-this will be useful to you all thorough your meditation.

Even when you?re as experienced as that anonymous monk! (Or nun?I really do wonder?)

CIA investigates whether laws broken helping NYPD (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The CIA inspector general is investigating whether the agency broke the law by helping the New York Police Department build intelligence-gathering programs that monitored life in Muslim communities, the agency said Tuesday following an investigation by The Associated Press. Separately, the U.S. government's top intelligence official conceded that it looked bad for the CIA to be working with city police departments.

"It's my own personal view that that's not a good optic, to have CIA involved in any city-level police department," said James Clapper, the U.S. director of national intelligence. "But I think CIA is going to address that."

The agency's unprecedented cooperation with the NYPD was a subject of an eight-month investigative reporting project by The Associated Press. The AP found that NYPD intelligence officers analyzed hundreds of mosques and student organizations, infiltrating dozens of them. Undercover officers eavesdropped in cafes and restaurants and wrote daily reports about what they overheard. The department also maintained a list of 28 countries that, along with "American Black Muslim," the department labeled "ancestries of interest."

A CIA officer, Lawrence Sanchez, helped create and guide these programs. From 2002 to 2004, when these programs were being built, Sanchez was on the CIA payroll and maintained an office at both the NYPD and the CIA's offices in New York. The programs have continued with at least the tacit support of President Barack Obama, whose administration has repeatedly sidestepped questions about them.

The NYPD also sent a detective on a temporary assignment to the CIA, where he completed the agency's 17-week foreign espionage course. After that rare training, he then returned to New York to supervise intelligence investigations.

It's unclear to what extent Mayor Michael Bloomberg oversaw these programs and he has repeatedly refused to answer questions about them. On Tuesday, he again referred questions to the NYPD, which said it welcomed the CIA's investigation.

During a rare joint intelligence oversight hearing on Capitol Hill, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., asked Clapper about the government's use of enhanced interrogation techniques, electronic surveillance of some U.S. citizens and the AP's reporting about CIA and New York police working together closely. "Do you believe that domestic activity by federal intelligence agencies, particularly the CIA, has crossed the line?" she asked.

Clapper said some of what Schakowsky cited was done in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

"Some things that were done right after, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 ? and I think that in itself is a very important factoid to remember," he said. "What was the atmosphere and the conditions then that led to certain of these actions?"

Clapper did not describe exactly how he expects the CIA will respond to the concerns he expressed about perceptions of the spy agency's work with New York police, and members of Congress did not press him on the subject.

The CIA's new director, David Petraeus, told lawmakers that the agency's inspector general began investigating the CIA-NYPD nexus at the request of acting director Michael Morell, before Petraeus took office just over one week ago.

Petraeus, testifying for the first time as CIA director, said he would follow up on the investigation "and just ensure that we are doing the right thing."

The CIA is prohibited from domestic spying. The NYPD, the CIA and Obama's counterterrorism advisor, John Brennan, have said the relationship never crossed that line and said Americans expected such collaboration after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

CIA spokeswoman Marie E. Harf said Tuesday that the recently launched investigation was a "preliminary review of the CIA's post-9/11 cooperation with the New York City Police Department."

Much of the NYPD's intelligence-gathering was conducted by a secret team called the Demographics Unit, which used plainclothes officers to help map and monitor ethnic communities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The NYPD has denied that unit ever existed, despite documents and interviews showing otherwise.

Sanchez took a leave of absence from the CIA in 2004 to become a senior official in the NYPD Intelligence Division. But some in the CIA raised questions about the relationship, forcing him to choose in 2007 whether to remain with the CIA or the NYPD. He left the NYPD last year.

After he left, the CIA dispatched one of its most senior clandestine officers to the NYPD, where he serves as a special assistant to intelligence chief David Cohen, himself a retired senior CIA officer. The officer, whom the AP is not identifying because he remains undercover, twice served as station chief in the Middle East and has run a major division at CIA headquarters.

Clapper described him on Capitol Hill as an analyst, but his office later said he misspoke and recognized the officer's career in the clandestine service.

Officials have described the posting as a sabbatical, a chance for him to learn the management of other departments. They have said he is not operating in the same role as Sanchez.

Civil rights groups have urged the Justice Department to investigate the NYPD for what it said was racial profiling. The New York Civil Liberties Union applauded the CIA investigation but it called for a parallel investigation into the NYPD saying, "The NYPD should not be engaged in warrantless surveillance or racial or religious profiling."

The Justice Department has said it is reviewing the matter. Under Attorney General Eric Holder, the department has stepped up enforcement of civil rights violations by police departments, but none of those cases involves national security investigations like the ones being conducted by the NYPD.

Also Tuesday, Rep. Rush Holt, D-N.J., called on the Justice Department to investigate. Holt, who previously served on the Intelligence Committee, said he doesn't remember being told about these programs or about the CIA's involvement.

"I think this is pretty troubling," he said. "It sounds to me like profiling."

Missouri should move ahead on health insurance exchanges ...

By SIDNEY D. WATSON

Special to The Star

A health insurance exchange is a great idea for Missourians who must buy individual policies because the exchange ensures that insurers are offering the same levels of coverage for the premiums charged, encourages price competition among insurers and simplifies the process of comparing one policy with another.

Nonetheless, Missouri Sen. Rob Schaaf, a St. Joseph Republican, last week opposed a state-sponsored health insurance exchange, citing data purporting premiums for an ?average family? in Missouri were lower than those in Massachusetts. But Schaaf forgot insurance premiums tell only a fraction of the story about the availability and quality of health insurance associated with those premiums.

I got the scoop on health insurance policies by using an exchange to shop for health insurance. You can, too. The Massachusetts health insurance exchange, Massachusetts Connector, is online at mahealthconnector.org/portal/site/connector. It makes shopping for individual health policies easy and transparent. I typed in a family size of three, entered a 1976 birth year, a Massachusetts ZIP code (I used 02138 for Cambridge) and the connector showed me my options.

First, the connector asked me if I earned less than $55,596 per year. If so, my family of three is eligible for a subsidy that caps premiums at a percentage of income.

All the policies listed on the Massachusetts Connector cover prescription drugs, maternity care and mental health treatment. The premium quoted is a guaranteed rate: I could not be charged more if I was sick, was a cancer survivor or had a chronic illness. I was guaranteed coverage and could not be turned down (as long as I really did live in that Cambridge ZIP code). There are three levels of coverage ? bronze, silver and gold ? with various premiums and deductibles, from none to $250 individual/$500 family to a maximum of $2,000 individual/$4,000 family.

It?s not so easy to shop for health insurance in Missouri because we do not have a state insurance exchange. But Healthcare.gov, a new website maintained by Health and Human Services, allows individuals and families to see some of the policies offered in Missouri. Not all insurers list their products, but it gives some idea of the policies available here.

Yes, health policies listed for Missouri quote lower premiums than the Massachusetts Connector, but there are also no guarantees. Companies report turning down 5 to 30 percent of applicants and charging higher premiums than those posted online for another 21 to 31 percent.

Policies marketed in Missouri also have high deductibles and sketchy coverage. No policies listed cover maternity benefits. One in five plans does not cover prescription drugs. Almost a third have deductibles of $10,000 or higher, half have deductibles ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, and the lowest deductible advertised is $1,500. The premiums look good at first blush, but if you get sick and need medical care, it?s going to end up costing a lot more in Missouri than Massachusetts because of those high deductibles and limited benefits. Missouri buyers beware.

In 2014, the Affordable Care Act will change how health insurers do business in Missouri. Insurers will no longer be able to refuse to sell policies to people who have pre-existing conditions. All policies offered in the individual market will have to cover maternity care and prescription drugs. New limits will apply on annual out-of-pocket costs and deductibles. Insurance exchanges will help consumers shop for health insurance policies and make available refundable tax credits for families of three with incomes up to $73,120 that will limit insurance premiums to a sliding scale of 2 percent to 9.5 percent of income. Too bad Schaaf made up his mind before he heard these facts.

Sidney D. Watson of St. Louis is a professor of law at the St. Louis University Center for Health Law Studies.

Bartz's good-bye bomb: 'Yahoo 'f---ed me over'

The "awesomness" of Carol Bartz doesn't end with her tenure at Yahoo.

The notoriously foul-mouthed CEO has given her first interview since being pushed out as Yahoo's leader Tuesday.

She tells Fortune that her house has been surrounded by media members since she was fired and ultimately her dismissal had to do with with the company's lack of revenue growth. Bartz said that was coming in 2012.

Bartz confirmed that she was fired over the phone by Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock while she was in New York City speaking at Citigroup's technology conference.

From Fortune:

"I called him at 6:06," she recalls. When he got on the line, she says, he started reading a lawyer's prepared statement to dismiss her.

"I said, 'Roy, I think that's a script,'" adding, "'Why don't you have the balls to tell me yourself?'"

When Bostock finished reading, Bartz didn't argue ? "I got it. I got it," she told the Yahoo chairman. "I thought you were classier," she added.

Keeping with her reputation, Bartz goes on to say that Yahoo's board "f*cked me over."

Bartz said she sent the email to her employees to take the dismissal in her own hands. She also says she plans on keeping her seat on Yahoo's board.

Not likley. A Yahoo spokesman told the Associated Press she can't stay.

"Ms. Bartz is obligated to resign from the Board and we expect her to do so," said Charles Sipkins, a spokesman for Yahoo's board of directors.

Maybe that was because she also called the board a bunch of "doofuses."

Direct Response: 5 Pre-9/11 Security Breaches and the Safety Measures That Followed

Features | Technology

Long before 2001 authorities were scrambling to respond to deadly attacks of all kinds

Pain reliever bottle with foil sealSMALL STEPS: A series of unsolved murders in Chicago in 1982, in which seven people died from poisoned pain relievers, led to federal laws for tamper-resistant packaging. Image: ? iStockphoto/skhoward

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted vast changes in air travel protocols and in national security in general. But significant incidents in prior decades had spurred authorities to take other precautions, some incremental and some dramatic, intended to stave off specific kinds of threats.

Here are the responses to five deadly security breaches before 9/11 and how those responses fared subsequently in heading off similar attacks. [Read more about how 9/11 changed the world of science in this in-depth report.]

1968?72: An epidemic of airliner hijackings
Incident: 137 flights originating in the U.S. and 326 worldwide fell prey to attempted or successful hijackings between 1968 and 1972, according to a 1986 study. Dozens of hijackings diverting flights to Cuba took place in 1968 and 1969 alone.
Response: In December 1972 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued emergency regulations requiring the screening of passengers and carry-on baggage with metal detectors and x-ray machines. Those rules were formalized in August 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed the Anti-Hijacking Act of 1974.
Outcome: Hijackings of U.S. aircraft were all but extinguished for several years, and hijacking rates never again reached the peak of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

1972: Munich Olympics massacre
Incident: 11 members of the Israeli Olympic contingent were killed, as was a police officer, when a Palestinian terrorist group stormed the apartments where the Israeli athletes were staying.
Response: Olympic security was vastly upgraded in the following years. By the time of the next summer games in Montreal in 1976, security measures in the Olympic Village included armed guards, metal detectors, visitor pat downs and chain-link security fences. Whereas the Munich games had spent a paltry $2 million on security, the security budget for a modern Olympics is nearly $1 billion.
Outcome: The 1996 summer games in Atlanta were marred by an attack carried out by anti-government terrorist Eric Robert Rudolph?a pipe bombing in Centennial Olympic Park killed one woman and wounded more than 100. (A cameraman also died of a heart attack running to cover the attack.) But the outcome could have been worse had not a security guard spotted the suspicious package and helped to clear the area before the bomb detonated.

1982: The Chicago Tylenol murders
Incident: Seven individuals in and around Chicago died in the fall of 1982 after consuming Tylenol that had been laced with cyanide. The killer, whose identity remains unknown, had poisoned the painkillers, repackaged them, and placed them on drugstore shelves in the Chicago area.
Response: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration quickly introduced rules in November 1982 requiring tamper-resistant packaging on over-the-counter medication.
Outcome: The next few years saw scattered fatalities from medications adulterated with cyanide in possible copycat attacks, but none reached the scale of the Chicago murders. In 1987 an FDA official acknowledged to The New York Times that no federal regulations could prevent all instances of tampering.

1988: Pan Am Flight 103
Incident: 270 people were killed when a bomb hidden inside a cassette player detonated in the cargo hold of a flight from London to New York City. The plane broke up over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 259 on board and 11 people on the ground. The only person convicted was Abdelbaset al Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer, who was later released from a Scottish prison on compassionate grounds in August 2009.
Response: The U.S. government passed the Aviation Security Improvement Act of 1990, mandating the inspection of checked baggage with explosive detectors.
Outcome: Even after a similar bombing of a French airliner over Africa in 1989, changes in domestic aviation were slow to take hold. By 1994 the General Accounting Office (GAO, now known as the Government Accountability Office) issued a report concluding that the "FAA has made little progress toward meeting the [1990] act's goal for deploying new explosive detection systems." By 1997 the FAA had certified only one device for explosive screening, the computed tomography x-ray machine CTX 5000SP, and just 54 of those machines had been deployed.

1998: Embassy bombings
Incident: Truck bombs detonated at U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, by terrorists believed to be followers of Osama bin Laden killed more than 220 people and wounded more than 4,000.
Response: The U.S. Department of State found that 85 percent of its diplomatic sites were vulnerable to attack and implemented a slew of stronger safety precautions. New regulations required embassies to be set back 30 meters from roadways, inside a perimeter fenced off with anti-climb walls and anti-ram barriers. The new rules also called for blast-resistant construction materials and windows. The U.S. had spent more than $5.9 billion building new embassies and upgrading existing facilities by 2007.
Outcome: Attacks on embassies have not stopped, but U.S. diplomatic outposts have not suffered incidents on the scale of the 1998 bombings. A 2008 GAO report concluded that the post-1998 security upgrades had made embassies safer but that physical constraints at various sites prevented diplomatic posts from reaching full compliance with State Department standards. In some locations, for instance, the area surrounding an embassy is too densely developed to allow a 30-meter setback from streets and walkways.

Gold And Silver Coin Investing For Your Future

Over and above being one of the most collectible and valuable of the precious metals, silver is a necessary component in many everyday electronics which will only serve to increase its value well into the future. Because the price of gold keeps rising, more typical investors are looking to silver to vary their investment portfolios. The technology sector continues to manufacture an incredible volume of computers and cell phones which require silver to function. A silver boom is bound to happen that is going to pay off big for the wise investors, those who start investing their money in silver now while it is still at a comparatively low price range. In the past ten years, the metal has increased an astonishing 300%. Due to this investors have been paying more attention to this market.

For the last 30 years or so, it?s a recognized fact that as the worth of the US dollar declines, the price of gold increases. In our economic climate it still makes good fiscal sense to invest in gold coins. Remember we all have read that gold is the investment of choice right now. And gold coins are always an outstanding asset. The last couple years gold has held steady at or about 7-8 hundred dollars an ounce but has fluctuated a lot between that number and over 1000 dollars. If there is another predicament it should go up to 1400 while holding steady at or above 1100. This could push it up to 2000 dollars.

There is no equivalent risk. Gold and silver in your custody is your ownership and reward. All bank deposits and paper or electronic transactions are nothing more than a promise to give by someone else. Moreover possessing precious metals is a good protection against inflation.

For the most part there are three half dollar coins that merit investing in. Since these half dollars are made of 90% silver, these coins are more sought-after by silver investors than others. These are the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the 1964 dated Kennedy half dollar and the Ben Franklin half dollar.

When silver and gold go up in price coins go up too. If silver or gold go down the coins continue to be valuable to collectors. If the world economy suffers again, all coins should escalate in value.

There are those who are worried about a dooms day future ? so there is only one medium of exchange that is acceptable?gold and silver. Because credit cards and paper money will be of no value. Remember that the smaller denominations ? dimes, will be of more value than the larger ? quarters. 1 oz silver will be used only for major purchases. Gold will buy almost anything, even the 1/10 oz coins. It seems like a great idea to have some silver coins and also some gold coins on hand in safe keeping.

Bomb suspect pleads guilty in domestic terror case

A man with extensive ties to white supremacists pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges he planted a bomb along a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade route in Spokane, Wash., targeting minorities.

Kevin Harpham, 37, reached a deal with federal prosecutors for a recommended sentencing range of 27 to 32 years in prison just days before his trial was to begin in U.S. District Court.

The pipe bomb was loaded with lead fishing weights coated in a chemical, and could have caused mass casualties, prosecutors said.

Harpham told U.S. District Court Judge Justin Quackenbush that it took him about a month to build the bomb. He acknowledged placing the device along the parade route in an attempt to commit a hate crime.

The backpack bomb was discovered by parade workers and disabled before it could explode.

"This community was terrorized on Jan. 17 when this occurred," U.S. Attorney Mike Ormsby said after the hearing. "Hopefully the healing that needs to occur as a result of this happening can begin."

Harpham acted alone, Ormsby said.

"There is no evidence to suggest anyone else was involved in this event," he said.

Ormsby praised the various law enforcement agencies that gathered evidence leading to Harpham's arrest on March 9. There was no particular tip that led officers to Harpham, Ormsby said. Rather, it was evidence from the bomb itself, he said.

The detonator was a remote car starter purchased over the Internet. The shrapnel that would have maimed victims was lead fishing weights purchased from Walmart. Harpham's DNA was on the handle of the backpack that held the bomb. After the arrest, officers found deleted photos in a digital camera that included pictures of Harpham at the parade, pictures of young black children gathering for the march and of a Jewish man who was wearing a yarmulke.

A key was discovering huge numbers of postings by Harpham, using a pen name, over a period of years on a white supremacist website called Vanguard News Network.

"He told others he was a white supremacist and white separatist," said assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Harrington.

The bomb was planted "to further his racist beliefs," Harrington told the judge.

The judge asked Harpham if he placed the bomb in an effort to hurt people because of their race, color or national origin.

"Yes," Harpham replied.

Ormsby said Harpham has offered no explanation for why he chose to commit a hate crime now.

The plea deal charged Harpham with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, and the hate crime of placing the bomb in an effort to target minorities. Harpham spoke in a clear voice when he said "guilty" to each of the two counts.

He will be sentenced Nov. 30.

"Hate-fueled incidents like this one have no place in a civilized society," said Thomas Perez, assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights. "Thankfully, no one was injured by this man's depraved act."

Public defender, Roger Peven, did not answer questions outside the courtroom and was not available for comment later.

Harpham originally was charged with committing a hate crime, using a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, attempt to use a weapon of mass destruction and unauthorized possession of an unregistered explosive device. He could have faced up to life in prison.

A resident of Addy, Harpham is an Army veteran who has extensive ties to white supremacist groups but no record of past crimes.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, has said that Harpham made more than 1,000 postings on the Vanguard News Network. The center also has said that Harpham belonged to a neo-Nazi group called the National Alliance.

Harpham served from 1996 to 1999 in the U.S. Army at what is now Joint Base Lewis-McChord, near Tacoma. His lawyers have said Harpham had not been recently employed.

He has remained in the Spokane County Jail without bail since his arrest.

Federal prosecutors will argue for a 32-year sentence. Harpham's lawyers will seek 27 years. If Quackenbush recommends a higher or lower sentence, the case still could go to trial. Under the deal, Harpham would remain on probation for the rest of his life once he leaves prison.

(AP) ? The U.S. national soccer team lost to Belgium 1-0 Tuesday, leaving Jurgen Klinsmann without a win in three games since he was hired as the Americans' coach.

This was the first road game for the U.S. since Klinsmann came aboard. The Americans earlier tied Mexico and lost to Costa Rica.

Nicolas Lombaerts' half volley in the 55th minute was the only goal in an exhibition game dominated by the Belgians on the rain-soaked field.

"It was an interesting game for both sides," Klinsmann said. "For the first 25 minutes the U.S. had a good passing game going, but then the individual Belgian class started to show. The players have learned a lot from the game."

Klinsmann, a former German star and coach, is looking to assemble the players who will play in the World Cup qualifiers that start next June. He pointed to such promising players as Juan Agudelo, Jose Torres, Brek Shea and Timmy Chandler.

An inexperienced U.S. team rarely threatened, and second-half substitutes Agudelo and Kyle Beckerman did little to energize play.

Still, the Americans had their best chance five minutes before the end. A midfield cross found its way to Edu, who headed the ball past Mignolet. But the referee disallowed the goal because Clarence Goodson was ruled to have handled the ball inside the box.

The U.S. played aggressively only in the opening minutes. In the sixth minute, Clint Dempsey's free kick was fumbled by Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Ten minutes later Torres curled a free kick from the right just past the far post.

In the 25th minute, Timmy Simons struck a low ball from the right edge of the area that U.S. goalie Tim Howard deflected. Seven minutes later, Dries Mertens crossed the ball into the area to an unmarked Marouane Fellaini, whose shot was stopped by Howard.

Belgium coach Georges Leekens said the U.S. played well for the first 15 minutes.

"Then we got a grip and we really wanted to win at home after the Azarbaijan match," he said.

Belgium drew against Azerbaijan on Friday, weakening its chances of qualifying for next year's European Championship.

Belgium: Simon Mignolet, Laurent Ciman, Toby Alderweireld, Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Lombaerts, Timmy Simons, Eden Hazard (Marvin Ogunjimi, 61), Marouane Fellaini (Romelu Lukaku, 61), Igor De Camargo, Axel Witsel, Dries Mertens.

United States: Tim Howard, Steve Cherundolo, Timmy Chandler, Clarence Goodson, Carlos Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey, Robbie Rogers (Kyle Beckerman, 46), Maurice Edu, Jozy Altidore (Juan Agudelo, 46), Jose Torres (Jeff Larentowicz, 75), Brek Shea.

I Have Arthritis; What Should I Eat? | Article Assault | Article Directory

Arthritis affects about one third of the population of the United States. It is characterized by symptoms such as pain in the affected joints as well as inflammation. Some types of arthritis are caused by degradation of the joints through wear and tear, and other types are caused by a deficiency in the body?s autoimmune system. But no matter the many distinct characteristics of each type of arthritis, one thing is certain: the patient who suffers from any one of the arthritic and rheumatoid conditions is in constant chronic pain.

So how do you remedy this?

Unfortunately, as far as a definitive cure to arthritis is concerned, there is none yet. This is particularly true when cartilage and other joint tissue has been significantly damaged. Since cartilage degeneration is irreversible, the patient who suffers this condition will have to live with the fact, but with the aim of reducing or managing the pain through arthritis treatment.

For many, medicines are the first course of action. Many traditional medicines are available without a prescription. Examples of these are readily available pain relievers like tylenol or ibuprofen. These arthritis drugs are often fast acting, but the effects are also quick to wear off. Other medicinal options may provide longer term results, but usually take a lot longer to create any benefit.

However, as medicinal treatments often have side effects, arthritis sufferers often look for other alternatives. One option is the ?arthritis diet.?

While there is no scientific evidence that diet can treat arthritis, certain choices seem like they can only provide a positive result on the body. Dieticians have long been suggesting a diet suitable for arthritis sufferers. Also, studies have concluded that high levels of fat and cholesterol may negatively impact the condition?s symptoms. This therefore shows that an arthritis diet, one that is controlled and balanced, would aid in preventing the onset of the disease in the first place.

An arthritis diet is not a strict diet. Instead, think of the plan as two lists ? one of foods that you should avoid, and a second of foods that may help to alleviate some symptoms. Think of it as one phase of your osteoarthritis treatment.

These are foods you should avoid:

Soda
Potatoes and other starchy foods
Red meat (less is better)
Foods high in saturated fat
Greasy foods
Fried foods

And here are the foods that may help relieve the pain:

Vitamin C (contained in many fruits)
Fish oils
Vitamin E (found in certain grain based oils and some nuts)
Whole grains

JERRY LEWIS KIDNAPPED! | Weekly World News

LAS VEGAS ? Jerry Lewis, the former host of the MDA telethon was kidnapped last night.

This year?s Muscular Dystrophy Telethon has gotten even more bizarre.? Jerry Lewis, who was ?relieved? or his duties as host ? or was fired, or ?retired? ? was kidnapped last night soon after he arrived in Las Vegas.

There was no ransom requested yet, but sources close the Lewis family say that the MDA ?thugs? want to keep Jerry Lewis ?quiet? until after the Telethon is over.

What appeared to be the last and best chance for Jerry Lewis to participate in this weekend?s MDA Telethon unraveled on Saturday. Musicians who had been hired to perform with Lewis on Thursday night for a video clip to be recorded were informed that the session had been canceled.

This year?s MDA Telethon airs live from Las Vegas.

No official confirmation has yet been furnished by the MDA, South Point or Lewis himself as to his current status for this year?s show.

Lewis spokeswoman Candi Cazau was outraged at the kidnapping and said that Lewis had ?no intention of interrupting the telecast.? He was dis-invited and he was going to respect their decision, no matter how foolish it was. But kidnapping him is beyond the pale.?

Las Vegas Police and the FBI are searching Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Los Angeles for Jerry Lewis..

In his most recent public appearance Aug. 20 at Red Rock Resort, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nevada Broadcasters Association, Lewis was in lively spirits and did not seem upset with the fact that he was cut from the MDA telectast.

?But behind the scenes, he was livid,? said a source close to Lewis.? ?He vowed to take revenge, and I guess MDA felt that they needed to kidnap him, so he wouldn?t ruin the telecast.? I understand it.?

This isn?t the first time Lewis was kidnapped.? He was also kidnapped in the 1980s:
