SAPD: 'Suspicious' boxes found outside Washington Square building contained electronics

Police find electronics inside 'suspicious' boxes

SAN ANTONIO -

A couple of boxes that aroused suspicion after being left behind the Washington Square office building on Dolorosa Street on Friday contained nothing more than electronics, San Antonio police said.

The two cardboard boxes were found on the ground beneath a bank of mailboxes on the side of the building facing West Nueva Street.

A security guard reportedly called 911 after 8 a.m., drawing police and firefighters to the scene, who quickly shut down a stretch of West Nueva Street between Santa Rosa and Urban Loop streets.

"The bomb squad made the location. They checked the packages by x-ray, ended up opening the packages and they found some electronics inside. But nothing that's going to harm anybody," said Sgt. Javier Salazar, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department. "It's been rendered safe."

Salazar said the two boxes had been addressed and appeared to be ready for mailing.

"That's quite possible what may have happened," Salazar said. "Somebody just didn't put them in the right receptacles and they just stuck them underneath."

Still, there was no taking chances, Salazar said. The building houses several government offices, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as offices for SAPDs Internal Affairs Division.

The Fire Department evacuated a section of the building closest to the mailboxes for about 90 minutes. No one was hurt.
