Jackson doc: No decision on whether he'll testify

(AP) ? The doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death told a judge on Monday he had not yet decided whether he will testify in his own defense.

Dr. Conrad Murray, when asked whether he understood his options to testify or remain silent, told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor he would let the judge know his decision Tuesday.

"I will still need more time to talk to my counsel about it," he said.

His comments outside the jury's presence came with his trial nearing completion and at the end of a day when he heard his own expert witness say that he wouldn't have accepted payment to do what Murray did for Michael Jackson ? administering a hospital anesthetic in the star's bedroom.

"I wouldn't even consider it," Dr. Paul White said. "It's something no amount of money could convince me to take on."

The use of the drug propofol to treat Jackson's insomnia was "a complete off-label use of the drug," he said. White also acknowledged that the drug should never be given outside a medical facility because of the need for proper lifesaving equipment.

White, a highly regarded and now-retired anesthesiologist, is sometimes referred to as "the father of propofol" for his early research on the drug. But on Monday he was a less-than-respected figure, drawing criticism from the prosecutor and censure from the judge who threatened to fine him $1,000 for contempt of court.

White came under a bruising cross-examination by prosecutor David Walgren, who attacked the expert's recent claim that Jackson caused his own death. Walgren questioned White's scientific calculations and noted he once led the defense to think Jackson drank an extra dose of propofol.

White acknowledged he had done no research on that theory when he posed it. A study later showed the theory to be unsupportable, he said.

While stopping short of blaming Murray for the singer's death, White blurted out during cross-examination that he believed Murray had loaded a syringe with the drug propofol and left it where Jackson could have gained access to it.

That scenario had not been offered before and it could explain how a groggy Jackson could have awakened from sedation, grabbed the syringe and injected the drug into his IV line.

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan tried to repair some of the damage by having White justify Murray's delay in calling emergency services for help when he found Jackson not breathing. White suggested by that time, Jackson was probably dead and it would not have mattered if paramedics were called quickly.

Murray has said he delayed calling emergency services while trying to give Jackson CPR.

White also said it would not have helped if Murray had disclosed to paramedics or hospital workers that he had given Jackson propofol. Murray didn't mention the drug until two days after Jackson's death, when he was interviewed by police.

Pastor had told White outside the jury's presence to stop trying to sneak in references to private conversations he had with Murray. The witness had suggested his opinions were partially based on what Murray told him, but those talks were not submitted as evidence.

At one point, White said he had been told by Murray that Jackson had his own stash of propofol beyond the hundreds of bottles of the drug that Murray had purchased and shipped to his girlfriend's apartment. Pastor warned White not to try to bring up the conversations or other excluded information again.

"It's deliberate and I don't like it," Pastor said. "It's not going to happen again."

But by the end of the morning, the judge said White had violated his order. He chastised White for telling the jurors at one point: "I'd like to talk to you about this, but the judge told me I couldn't."

He said he considered that remark direct contempt of court but would allow White to explain at a contempt hearing on Nov. 16 before he imposes the $1,000 fine.

White was repeatedly questioned about the ways in which Murray had broken guidelines and rules governing propofol use. Walgren confronted him with excerpts from his own writings in textbooks that set down rules broken by Murray when he administered the drug in Jackson's bedroom.

He also challenged a series of charts presented to the jury by White, who said he had not prepared them and had another expert do the work. The defense said that expert would testify Tuesday before the defense rests its case.

Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter, has acknowledged he was giving Jackson doses of the propofol in the singer's bedroom as a sleep aid. He told police that he left Jackson's room for two minutes on June 25, 2009, and returned to find the pop superstar unresponsive.

White said in forming his opinions, he assumed Murray was out of the room much longer, making phone calls. The retired anesthesiologist said he would not leave the room if he were treating a patient who had indicated he liked to inject propofol into himself, as Murray claims that Jackson had told him.

White said he has been paid $11,000 for his work for the defense so far.

White's testimony put him at odds with his colleague and longtime friend, Dr. Steven Shafer, who testified for the prosecution. Shafer said White's self-administration theory is not supported by the evidence in the case, in his view, and he called the theory "crazy" during his testimony earlier this month.

White and Shafer were colleagues at Stanford University and conducted research on propofol before it was approved for use in U.S. operating rooms in 1989. Both help edit a leading anesthesia journal, and until White's retirement last year, both were practicing anesthesiologists.

Walgren said Shafer will return as a prosecution rebuttal witness Tuesday.

Mexico: Video threatens to disclose Zetas allies (AP)

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? An Internet video is threatening Mexico's Zetas drug cartel with exposure of its allies in the local police and news media this week unless the gang frees a kidnapped member of the international hacker movement known as "Anonymous."

The YouTube message, which claims to be from Anonymous "Veracruz, Mexico and the world," says it is "tired of the criminal group the Zetas, which is dedicated to kidnapping, stealing and extortion," and threatens to fight back with information instead of weapons.

It said it knows of police officers, journalists, taxi drivers and others working with the Zetas.

The video refers to an unidentified person kidnapped in the coastal city of Veracruz, and says: "You have made a great mistake by taking one of us. Free him."

The hacker group, which has claimed responsibility for attacks on corporate and government websites worldwide, supposedly will act Friday if the kidnapped activist is not freed or is harmed, according to the message.

"We cannot defend ourselves with weapons, but we can with their cars, houses, bars," the message adds, apparently alluding to properties owned by cartel supporters. "It's not difficult. We know who they are and where they are are."

"Information is free," it says. "We do not forgive. We do not forget."

An official with the Veracruz state attorney general's office, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak on the record, said the office could not confirm video's authenticity or the case of the kidnapping.

Veracruz, an oil state on the Gulf of Mexico with a major port of the same name, has seen a spike in drug violence in recent months in what authorities say is a battle between the Zetas drug cartel, which has controlled the territory for at least a year, and its rivals. Dozens of bodies have been showing up in recent weeks, including the dumping of 35 last month on a main highway in rush-hour traffic in the city of Boca del Rio.

Two other Internet postings since July have announced the arrival of group that calls itself the "Mata Zetas," or Zeta Killers, who authorities say are likely aligned with the powerful Sinaloa Cartel. Others have raised questions about whether the group's members are vigilantes or other rogue bands taking justice into their own hands against the Zetas.

The new message, presented by someone wearing a theater mask that is a trademark of Anonymous, was reportedly uploaded to websites early this month, but was first reported Friday on the website of the global intelligence think tank Stratfor.

Stratfor, in its analysis of the video, said anyone exposed by Anonymous as a Zetas collaborator ? accurately or not ? would be targeted by rival gangs, and the Zetas could respond by attacking Internet activists even if they are not affiliated with Anonymous.

Three people have been killed recently in the northern states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas by suspected Zetas who apparently believed the victims used the Internet to spread information about the gang.

UFC 137 press conference video: ?Cro Cop? says this might be it

The 2011 version of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic is a different fighter in and out of the cage than we saw in the early 2000's. Whether that will lead to one final win tomorrow night is anyone's guess, but? Cro Cop is at peace with whatever happens.

"I'm relaxed, there's no pressure on me. I will do best to beat Roy, who I respect a lot. I don't want to underestimate him,"Cro Cop said during the UFC 137 press conference. "But if you ask me, this is the most important fight in my career. This will be the most important fight in my career and that's why I trained so hard for Saturday evening. I'm just looking forward to it."

Cro Cop's lost two straight and 3-of-5. More importantly, he was the victim of terrible knockout at UFC 128 at the hands of Brendan Schaub. He faces another fighter badly in need of a win in Roy Nelson. Cro Cop doesn't want to go out with three straight losses.

"[...] this could easily be my last fight in the UFC. It has nothing to do with the result, if I win or lose. Especially if I lose, but even if I win it could be my last fight in the UFC. And I'll really give my best and hope this will be an attractive fight. I cannot afford anymore, especially in this fight, that it's declared as the most boring fight of the evening like the fight with Frank Mir. I think me and Roy will perform a good fight and the fans will be satisfied and excited," said Cro Cop.

If he sounds too relaxed, don't be fooled because Cro Cop told the media on Wednesday he has some extra motivation, he wants to avoid ridicule in his home country.

"People in my country will say, 'If you beat him, you beat a fat guy', and if you lost to him they start laughing to me, 'You lost against him', but he's a super dangerous guy who can knock out anyone. Some people might be tricked by his body, but he's a dangerous guy," said Cro Cop.

Nelson is a minus-275 favorite in Las Vegas sportsbooks. A Cro Cop bet brings back plus-235.

(AP) ? The death toll from a twin bombing in a Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad rose on Friday to 32 ? the worst violence to hit Iraq since President Barack Obama last week said all American forces would leave the country by the end of this year.

The two blasts, which took place Thursday evening at a music store, wounded 71 other people, police and health officials said. First one bomb went off and then, minutes later, another bomb exploded, targeting rescue workers and onlookers who had arrived after the first blast.

The officials said the death toll rose overnight after some of the more seriously wounded died. The wounded had been taken to different hospitals, they said, and so it took time for officials to get an accurate death toll.

Among the dead were eight security officers, including an army lieutenant colonel, four women and at least eight children, the officials said. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Many Iraqis fear violence will increase when the U.S. troops leave the country. Insurgents have for months sought to exploit continued instability and security gaps that Iraqi forces have been unable to close.

"I was on my motorbike with a delivery to a restaurant when the first bomb exploded," said Maytham Abdul-Karim, 32, the owner of a nearby kiosk selling pickles and yogurt. "The sound was very powerful. I stopped. I saw smoke coming from the site. I heard policemen calling on people to keep a distance out of fear of another bomb explosion."

Iraqis have lived through years of violence and are well aware of the danger that one explosion can be followed by another, more powerful blast. Despite that knowledge, many still run to the scene to help.

After the first explosion Thursday night, some of Abdul-Karim's friends ran from the restaurant they were eating to the blast site.

"Then the second bomb exploded. Two of them have died for sure, but I do not know the fate of the others. I went to the hospital they were taken to, but I was not allowed to get in because of the huge crowd of people asking for their loved ones," he said.

Violence has dropped dramatically across Iraq since just a few years ago, when sectarian violence brought the nation to the brink of civil war. But deadly bombings and attacks still happen nearly everyday.

Experts try to cast doubt in Jackson doctor case (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The battle of scientific experts in the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor took a new turn late Thursday as defense lawyers made an 11th hour disclosure that their scientific expert has devised a new computer simulation shedding light on what killed the pop superstar.

Prosecutors told the judge they were surprised by the new development and need time to study the software program used by Dr. Paul White, a top expert on the anesthetic propofol. The judge agreed.

He said White could conclude his defense testimony Friday but he would give the prosecution the weekend to analyze the computer data before the star witness of Dr. Conrad Murray's defense is cross-examined.

"This is extraordinarily complicated material," said Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor.

The developments were gleaned at the end of the court day from a transcript of a lengthy private conference with lawyers in the judge's chambers.

The new twist means another delay in the trial's conclusion, the judge said, and he worried aloud, "I just don't know if we are going to start losing jurors."

"This jury is extraordinarily dedicated to the case," he said. "But they have lives and commitments."

Jurors were told at the outset that they would be finished with the trial Friday, Pastor said. Now, he said, he's not sure when the trial will conclude.

The defense, meanwhile, sought to shift blame to another doctor and a drug different from the anesthetic that killed Jackson. Murray's lawyers called an expert to testify that the star was addicted to a Demerol in the months before his death.

They suggested the singer's withdrawal from the painkiller triggered the insomnia that Murray was trying to resolve when he gave Jackson propofol.

Murray's attorneys claim the ultimate blame lies with Jackson himself, but they also sought to implicate his dermatologist in the drug-laced path to his June 2009 death.

They called White to the stand late in the day to cast doubt on a colleague's earlier testimony that Murray was responsible for Jackson's death.

Court recessed before White gave his central opinion. He did say he was "perplexed" after reading documents in the case about whether Murray administered the propofol dose that killed Jackson.

White noted that Murray described to police a very low dose of the drug. If that was true, White said, "I would not have expected Michael Jackson to have died."

White said if Murray did in fact put Jackson on an IV drip of propofol and leave him unattended, he could not justify it. White did not immediately offer an alternate theory of what happened.

Authorities contend Murray delivered the lethal dose and botched resuscitation efforts. Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death.

There was no mention of propofol during the testimony of Dr. Robert Waldman, an addiction expert who said he studied the records of Dr. Arnold Klein, Jackson's longtime dermatologist, in concluding the star was dependent on Demerol. Records showed Klein used Demerol on Jackson repeatedly for procedures to enhance his appearance.

No Demerol was discovered in the singer's system when he died, but propofol was found throughout his body.

Waldman relied on Klein's records from March 2009 until days before Jackson died. Waldman said he was not shown earlier records and didn't review a police interview of Murray about his treatment of the star.

Under questioning by Murray's lead lawyer, Ed Chernoff, Waldman said, "I believe there is evidence that he (Jackson) was dependent on Demerol, possibly."

Klein has emerged as the missing link in the involuntary manslaughter trial, with the defense raising his name at every turn and the judge ruling he may not be called as a witness because his care of Jackson is not at issue. He has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

But Klein's handwritten notes on his visits with Jackson were introduced through Waldman, who said Klein was giving Jackson unusually high doses of Demerol for four months ? from March through June 2009 ? with the last shots coming three days before the singer's death.

Over three days in April, the records showed Jackson received 775 milligrams of Demerol along with small doses of the sedative Versed. Waldman's testimony showed Klein, who also was Jackson's longtime friend, was giving the singer huge doses of the powerful drug at the same time Murray was giving Jackson the anesthetic propofol to sleep.

"This is a large dose for an opioid for a dermatology procedure in an office," Waldman said.

He told jurors the escalating doses showed Jackson had developed a tolerance to the drug and was probably addicted. He said a withdrawal symptom from the drug is insomnia.

On cross-examination, prosecutor David Walgren tangled with the expert, who was hostile to most of his questions. He elicited from Waldman that the law requires physicians to keep accurate and detailed records, which Murray did not. The doctor also said all drugs should be kept in a locked cabinet or safe where they could not be stolen or diverted by anyone.

Waldman said every doctor also must document when the drugs are stored and when they are used. Murray told police he kept no records on his treatment of Jackson.

Waldman, who has treated celebrities and sports stars at expensive rehab clinics, told jurors treatment can work if the addict is willing to admit a problem.

Several prosecution experts have said the propofol self-administration defense was improbable, and a key expert said he ruled it out completely, arguing the more likely scenario was that Murray gave Jackson a much higher dose than he has acknowledged.

Jackson had complained of insomnia as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts and was receiving the anesthetic and sedatives from Murray to help him sleep.

Murray's police interview indicates he didn't know Jackson was being treated by Klein and was receiving other drugs.

In response to questions from a prosecutor, Waldman said some of the symptoms of Demerol withdrawal were the same as those seen in patients withdrawing from the sedatives lorazepam and diazepam. Murray had been giving Jackson both drugs.

White is expected to be the final defense witness.

White and Waldman do not necessarily have to convince jurors that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose, but merely provide them with enough reasonable doubt about the prosecution's case against Murray.

Olympus denies wrongdoing as groups urge reforms (AP)

TOKYO ? The new president of embattled Olympus Corp. on Thursday denied the company's $687 million payment for financial advice was excessive, while foreign business groups urged Japan to bolster its lagging corporate governance rules to avoid more high-level scandals.

Shuichi Takayama, who was named president Wednesday following the abrupt resignation of Chairman and President Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, sought to placate frustrated shareholders with his second press conference in less than a day.

Takayama stuck to the camera and medical equipment maker's denials of wrongdoing over its $687 million payment to an obscure Wall Street financial adviser as part of a $2 billion purchase of U.K.-based Gyrus Group Plc. The payment represented more than a third of the acquisition price. Fees for advisers are normally 1 to 2 percent of the deal value.

Takayama also maintained the company had done nothing wrong in other past acquisitions that were massively written down in value.

Kyodo news agency, meanwhile, reported that Japan's Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission has launched an inquiry into the company's acquisitions. The regulator wouldn't confirm the report.

Former Olympus CEO Michael Woodford, whose revelations triggered the scandal and his sacking by the Olympus board two weeks ago, has turned over documents to the U.K. Serious Fraud Office, and media reports say the FBI is also investigating.

A board member at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan said that if Tokyo had stronger corporate governance laws, the "fiasco" at Olympus would not be as serious as it has become.

Woodford, a British national, has said he was dismissed because he questioned the $687 million fee as well as the lofty prices Olympus paid for three small money-losing Japanese companies with seemingly little strategic value.

Between 2006 and 2008, it paid a total of 73.4 billion yen ($967 million) for recycling company Altis Co., food container maker News Chef Co. and cosmetics firm Humalabo Co. All three are based in the same building in Tokyo.

Olympus wrote down more than three-quarters of their value in fiscal year ended March 2009. It said Thursday that the deals were unrelated to the Gyrus acquisition.

"There were things I could not talk about yesterday," Takayama said. "I thought about it and decided that we should release information."

"Those decisions were made in line with our mid- to long-term strategy," he said of the acquisitions.

Olympus confirmed for the first time the identities of the Gyrus deal financial advisers as Axes America LLC of New York and Axam Investments Ltd., both founded by U.S. resident Hajime Sagawa. It decided to work with Sagawa because of his financial experience and connections.

Takayama denied the fee was excessive. Executive Vice President Hisashi Mori said there was no prior personal relationship between Sagawa and Olympus executives, but he declined to disclose who made the initial introduction.

He blamed Woodford for disclosing secret internal information, which led to the recent plunge in Olympus shares.

The company says Woodford was dismissed because of his unilateral decision-making and intimidating managerial style. The Briton also spent much of his time outside of Japan, Takayama said.

He acknowledged that the board of directors did not discuss Woodford's allegations when they voted to fire him.

Investors appeared encouraged by Takayama's statements, at least for now. The issue surged more than 23 percent in trading Thursday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, recovering some ground after losing more than half its value in the days after Woodford's firing.

Olympus is setting up its own independent task force to look into the deals "as soon as possible." Takayama did not specify a timeframe. The company pledged to be more forthcoming with information in the future.

Four chambers of commerce representing businesses from the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on Thursday urged the Japanese government to bolster corporate governance as it seeks to revise its Company Law.

Japanese listed companies significantly lag those in other leading economies in the use of independent outside directors and tend to appoint only board members with close ties to the company's management or majority shareholder, they said in a press release.

That has undermined the confidence of foreign investors and perpetuated the perception that Japanese corporations are "insider-dominated" and out-of-step with global governance standards, the statement said.

Japan should amend its laws to include a specific definition of "independent outside director," require listed companies to appoint a meaningful number of such directors, and require an independent committee to handle board decisions where the risks of self-interest and conflicts are inherently high.

The initiative was not prompted by problems at Olympus, but rather by the "frustration and concern" with the perceived slow progress in amending the law, said James Lawden of the European Business Council in Japan, at a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan.

Nicholas Benes, a governor at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, said that if Tokyo adopted the proposed changes in the law, "the fiasco over at Olympus that's now occurring would not be occurring the same way, and as badly."

More broadly, failing to improve Japanese corporate governance will hurt Japan's economy as a whole, he argued.

Jackson doc's defense drawing to a close

The defense of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death will shift Thursday away from personality to the science that his attorneys hope will prevent the physician from being convicted.

The final witnesses testifying for Dr. Conrad Murray will be fellow doctors, one an expert in addiction and the other in the powerful anesthetic that the Houston-based cardiologist was giving Jackson as a sleep aid.

Video: Manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray (on this page)

Their testimony could make the difference in whether Murray is convicted or acquitted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jackson's June 2009 death. Authorities contend Murray gave Jackson a fatal dose of propofol and botched resuscitation efforts.

Murray's attorneys contend Jackson gave himself the fatal dose of propofol when his doctor left the room, but have not yet shown evidence about how that theory is even possible. Several prosecution experts have said the self-administration defense was improbable and a key expert said he ruled it out completely, arguing the more likely scenario is that Murray gave Jackson a much higher dose than he has admitted.

Slideshow: The face of change (on this page)

The scientific testimony of Dr. Robert Waldman and Dr. Paul White comes a day after jurors heard from five of Murray's one-time patients, who described the cardiologist as a caring physician who performed procedures for free and spent hours getting to know them. When Ruby Mosley described Murray's work at a clinic he founded in a poor neighborhood in Houston in memory of his father, tears welled up in the eyes of the normally stoic doctor-turned-defendant.

Waldman is an addiction expert who may try to bolster the defense theory that Jackson had become dependent on propofol to sleep and was driven to self-administer it when Murray left his bedside.

It will be up to White to explain whether that was possible. He sat in court throughout the testimony of prosecution propofol expert Dr. Steven Shafer, at times shaking his head and furiously passing notes to defense attorneys. In the courthouse, he has been seen conferring with Murray in the hallway outside the courtroom where the case is being heard.

Story: Patients' praise makes Jackson's doctor cry

White and Waldman do not necessarily have to convince jurors that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose, but merely provide them with enough reasonable doubt about the prosecution case against Murray.

While prosecutors have portrayed Murray, 58, as a reckless physician who repeatedly broke the rules by giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid, jurors heard a different portrait of the doctor on Wednesday.

Several of the character witnesses called described Murray as the best doctor they had ever seen and highlighted his skills at repairing their hearts with stents and other procedures.

"I'm alive today because of that man," said Andrew Guest of Las Vegas, who looked Murray. "That man sitting there is the best doctor I've ever seen."

Another former patient, Gerry Causey, stopped to shake Murray's hand in the courtroom and said the physician was his best friend.

A prosecutor noted that none of them were being treated for sleep issues, although Causey and others said they didn't believe the allegations against Murray.

Defense attorneys have told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor they expect their case to conclude on Thursday. Pastor has said if that happens, closing arguments would occur next week.

PFT: Lions' Stafford appears ready to start

Tony SparanoAP

If there was any doubt that Dolphins coach Tony Sparano is bracing ? and/or hoping ? to be fired, there should now officially be none.

According to Jorge Sedano of 790 The Ticket in Miami, Sparano has put his house up for sale.

It may not be a coincidence that the news comes a day after word broke of the Dolphins? flirtation with former Steelers coach Bill Cowher.? In January, Sparano endured the indignity of owner Stephen Ross and G.M. Jeff Ireland pursuing former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh for the job that Sparano still held.

The latest development possibly reflects something more than Sparano getting ready for the inevitable.? He?s smart enough to at least wonder whether owner Stephen Ross is maintaining the status quo, at least for now, in order to increase the chances of sliding to the bottom of the league, and in turn to the top of the draft order.? If Sparano is fired, he?d get a buyout for the balance of his contract, which was extended as a courtesy/apology/P.R. move after the Harbaugh debacle ? and Sparano would get a head start on finding his next job, presumably as an offensive line coach.? He could even join a team for the balance of the 2011 season, as a consultant.

Thus, it?d be interesting to know how many times Sparano has overruled assistant coaches this year, deliberately making ill-advised calls that contributed to losses.? I have no reason to think this has happened, but if I were investigating whether he?s trying to get fired, that would be an obvious place to start looking for proof.

Regardless, it?s now clear Sparano knows it?s coming.? The only remaining questions are whether he?s trying to make it happen and, if so, when it will indeed occur.

UPDATE 5:45 p.m. ET:? Sparano said today that he put the house up for sale because he?s an ?empty-nester.?? Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post reports that the house was ?initially? put on the market in January, a week after Sparano received a contract extension from the team ? and also roughly two weeks after he was figuratively castrated by an owner who tried to hire Jim Harbaugh.

Scientists build logic gates out of gut bacteria, then hopefully wash their hands

Ever thought about upgrading your PC by breeding more cores? Or planting a few GBs of extra storage out in the yard? Us neither, until we heard that scientists at Imperial College in London have succeeded in building "some of the basic components of digital devices" out of genetically modified E.Coli. We've seen these germs exploited in a similar way before, but Imperial's researchers claim they're the first to make bacterial logic gates that can be fitted together to form more complex gates and potentially whole biological processors. Aside from our strange upgrade fantasies, such processors could one day be implanted into living bodies -- to weed out cancer cells, clean arteries and deliver medication exactly where it's needed. So much for Activia.

(AP) ? Curtis Painter didn't look ready for the ball on a botched snap that set up the first of many scores for the New Orleans Saints.

Few of Painter's Indianapolis Colts teammates seemed ready to play, either.

The Colts were no match for Drew Brees and the Saints, giving up as many points as any team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 in a 62-7 loss to New Orleans on Sunday night.

"We just didn't play near well enough," Painter said. "We made a few too many mistakes in the beginning, and any time you're playing a team as good as them, they're going to make you pay. We just kind of got off to a rough start and you've got to credit them.

"Obviously, we need to work on some things. We are just going to have to keep working to get it straight."

Painter was only 9 of 17 for 67 yards and had an interception returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Leigh Torrence.

Running back Joseph Addai tried to return from a nagging hamstring injury but lasted only two series. His replacement, Delone Carter, carried 10 times for 89 yards and Indianapolis' long TD, but also fumbled.

For the seventh game this season, Colts star quarterback Peyton Manning was forced to watch because of a neck injury that has sidelined him all season.

As hard as it had to be for Manning to be a spectator in his return to his native New Orleans, it had to be even harder to see his team's mistake-prone performance. These Colts looked more like the bumbling Saints of old that his father, Archie, starred for three decades ago.

The winless Colts (0-7) are now guaranteed to have fewer than 10 victories in a season for the first time in nine years, and at this rate might not win many games at all.

The Colts had three turnovers, including two in the first quarter, and each led to a Saints touchdown.

"Honestly, I don't think we showed up to play," receiver Austin Collie said. "Our mindset could have been a whole lot better."

Drew Brees completed 31 of 35 passes for 325 yards and five touchdowns, and the Saints set a franchise record for points and victory margin.

"I was real proud of how we played, how we handled the week of practice," said Saints coach Sean Payton, standing on crutches after the game because of a broken left leg. "We spent a lot of time during the week just talking about us beginning to play our best football, because we really felt while we were 4-2, we hadn't done that."

Payton had called offensive plays from the sidelines since he took his first head coaching job with New Orleans in 2006, but that changed after he was caught up in a tackle along the sideline during a loss at Tampa Bay last week and was injured. Payton had surgery last Monday and didn't attend a practice until Thursday.

Sitting high up in the Superdome for the game against the Colts, he had to like what he saw down below, where offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. called plays for the first time.

Brees had two touchdown passes to Marques Colston and one to Darren Sproles in the first quarter. His fourth and fifth touchdown tosses went to second-year tight end Jimmy Graham in the third quarter.

It seemed the Saints (5-2) could do whatever they wanted, also rushing for 236 yards.

Colts safety Antoine Bethea called his unit's performance "embarrassing."

"We just can't do that," he said. "I mean, 62 points against us?"

The Saints' point total tied the most in a game by any team since the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970.

The Saints previous franchise high for points in a game was 51 on three occasions and their largest previous victory margin was 42 over Denver in 1988.

"We had a great game plan. We played with a lot of confidence. Pete did a phenomenal job," Brees said. "It was just our night, one of those games that doesn't come along too often. ... We needed a win like this, especially after the past week and everything we've gone through."

Colston had seven catches for 98 yards.

Brees wasn't intercepted before he was replaced by Chase Daniel late in the third quarter, a move that prevented New Orleans' starting quarterback from extending his NFL record of four straight games with at least 350 yards passing.

Mark Ingram rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries but limped to the locker room early in the fourth quarter with what Payton said was a heel injury, adding that X-rays were negative. Sproles carried 12 times for 88 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown.

The Saints had 557 yards and a team-record 36 first downs.

"That team played better than we did in every area and we just got whooped across the board," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. "It's one of those things that once you don't do the little things right, there is a lot of bad things that happen to you. Obviously, I have to take responsibility for our team and the way that they played."
