Rhode Island First Lady To Officiate At Civil Union Ceremony

Written by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on October 22, 2011.

Rhode Island?s first lady, Stephanie Chafee, will be performing a civil union ceremony for her two friends. Lynn McKinney and Ron Margolin had asked Governor Lincoln Chafee to officiate at the ceremony set for 5 November. Unfortunately, Governor Chafee will be in Israel on an economic development trip.

McKinney and Margolin have been together for 32 years, and are supporters of Chafee. McKinney also noted to ABC6 that the Chafees have been advocates for the LGBT community. Stephanie Chafee was one of the first nurses in Rhode Island to work with AIDS patients. Lawmakers do routinely authorize people who are not judges or members of the clergy in order to perform marriages. This is the first time, though, that lawmakers have approved a civil union ceremony request since it was legalized this year.
